Phyllis Sturdivant

Phyllis Joan Sturdivant was born in Boone, Iowa on August 29, 1926, the daughter of Ralph and Cleo (Warren) Hitsman. She was baptized at the Christian Church in Luther and attended school in Luther until 1943 when the family moved to the Madrid area. Joan graduated from Madrid High School in 1945. She received a degree in Interior Design from LaSalle University. Joan married Paul L. Sturdivant on April 20, 1947, in Madrid. Joan and Paul were members of the First Christian Church in Madrid. In June 1984, Joan and Paul then joined St. John's Lutheran Church. Mrs. Sturdivant was a member of Ruth Circle, PEO, a volunteer at Hospice House in Ames and Reiman Gardens in Ames. In 2003, she was honored as "Volunteer of the Year" for Iowa Hospice Association. Joan lived in Madrid for 46 years. Joan and Paul enjoyed golfing for 25 years and she played on the couple’s league and women’s league. Joan retired from Younkers after 20 years as an Interior Designer in 1988 upon which Paul and Joan moved to Ames in 1988.

Mrs. Sturdivant is survived by her son David (Kathy) of O’Fallon, Missouri, and two grandchildren, Patrick and Megan Sturdivant. Joan was preceded in death by her husband Paul, her son Douglas, brother DuWayne, sister LaVonne Baker and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at Iles Funeral Homes Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Chapel in Madrid at 1:00 PM, Saturday June 10, 2023. The burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Madrid.
