Last season was a standout for the Madrid Tigers football team as they made it to the Class A semifinals before seeing their season end in the UNI Dome. They went 11-1 and 6-0 in district play. Head coach Brock Hinkel returns on the sideline and will be assisted by Bill Dean, Steve Perkins, Gabe Dunn, Jess Mickle, Jay Wicker, Tyler Ahrens and CJ Dean.

“Overall, I think we can be a well rounded team with multiple contributors on offense, defense and special teams,” Hinkel said. “We graduated 14 seniors last year so we have a lot of new faces in some new positions.”

Hinkel noted they closed the door on last season and are now focusing on this season. They plan to take it week by week.

There are some returning players who play some key roles last year: Quarterback/linebacker Preston Wicker, Wide receiver/defensive back Toryn Severson, offensive line/defensive lineman Terrin Lawrenson, OL/DL Hunter Steward, OL/DL Alexander Kasner and OL/DL Thomas Skalicky.

Some of the newcomers to keep an eye on this season will be: QB/WR/DB Loken Velky, running back/LB Easton Halverson, tight end/LB Emerson Bridgewater, OL/DL Max Morgan, RB/LB Will Atkinson, WR/DB Kinnick Grimm, WR/DB Jake Sawyer, OB/WR/DB Chase Perkins and TE/WR/DL Jeyvn Severson.

Success for the Tigers this year will be by getting better every single week.

Coach Hinkel tabbed Mount Ayr, Lynnville-Sully and Central Decatur as some of the top teams in the district this season.

“I’m a big believer in the week by week approach,” Hinkel said. “Don’t get too caught up in what we did in the past or what we want to do in the future and truly just focus on what we need to do that week.”
