Phyllis Gathercole

Phyllis Gathercole passed away on April 28, 2022, at home in Arizona.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m Friday, May 6, 2022, at the Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home. Service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, May 7, 2022, also at the funeral home

Phyllis was born January 8th (on Elvis’s birthday), 1949, to Clifford and Helen Jagerson of rural Madrid. She was a member of Garden Prairie United Church of Christ of rural Madrid, where she was baptized, and where she served as the church organist for many years. She was also a member of the Faith Circle at the church.

Phyllis graduated from Madrid High School in 1967. After graduation, she began working at the Des Moines Register and Tribune, and later at Hach Chemical in Ames. In November 1975, she began her 30-year career at John Deere Des Moines Works in Ankeny.

On February 7, 1986, Phyllis married Dave Gathercole and instantly became a mom to Mashelle, Julie, Chuck, Mike, and Jessica. Phyllis loved to cook and entertain. She loved canning the many vegetables from Dave’s Garden. She also enjoyed playing cards, doing her Sudoku and Word Jumble puzzles, TV game and reality shows, and traveling, but NOT camping!

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Dave; daughters, Mashelle Bollie of Granger, Julie (Bill) Sowder of San Tan Valley, AZ, and Jessica (Matt) Flannery of Tea, SD; sons, Chuck (Sheila) Gathercole of Madrid and Mike (Nicole) Gathercole of Davenport; brothers, Don Jagerson and Roger (Pam) Jagerson of Madrid; 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; along with many other relatives and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Richard; one sister, Bette Boydston; and sister-in-law, Pat Jagerson.
