Elizabeth Shearer, 93

Elizabeth Shearer passed peacefully from this life on April 20, 2021, at the Madrid Home in Madrid. Due to COVID-19 precautions, a private celebration of life ceremony will be held by the family at a later date.

Elizabeth (Liz) was born to Jack C. and Vera (Sexauer) Zenor on May 30, 1927, in Madrid, where she spent the early years of her life. She later moved to the Luther area, graduating from Luther High School, where she enjoyed playing on the girls’ basketball team.

As he told it, Harold Shearer said he saw Liz at a holiday party and told his friends, “That’s the woman I’m going to marry,” and he did, on November 21, 1947. The couple had three children: Susan, Patti, and Don E. Harold worked at John Deere Des Moines Works while Liz cared for their family. They were members of the Hopkins Grove United Methodist Church, charter members of the Central Iowa Two Cylinder Club, and they loved hosting friends. In the 1970s, they moved to Liz’s family farm near Luther, where she cared for her mother after her father’s death. Liz and Harold spent several winters in Arizona after Harold’s retirement. They were married for 67 years before Harold’s passing in 2015.

Liz was attuned to the simple and sweet joys of life: tending a large garden and canning tomatoes in the summer, listening to the wrens outside the farmhouse door, and loving the many generations of her family. Her warmth and kindness will be missed by those left to cherish her memory, including two daughters, Susan Barker and Patti Boone of Madrid; son, Don E. (Diane) Shearer of Madrid; five grandchildren, Alicia (Matt) Duncan of Ames, Emily (Aaron) McCarty of Madrid, Nathan “Boonie” (Bethany) Boone of Johnston, Squire (Amber) Boone of Brooklyn, NY, and Danielle (Jake) Earp of Ankeny; six great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Henry Duncan, Claire and Finn McCarty, and Strummer and Lola Boone.

Preceding Liz in passage were her parents; brother, Charles Zenor; husband Harold Shearer; and sons-in-law Steve Barker and Dan Boone.

The family thanks the Madrid Home Communities for the wonderful care Liz received there over the years.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be directed to one of the following:
